In case this makes a difference, when I had my two backup drives working in tandem in Time Machine, I had Mountain Lion.

I have also just waited a few days to see if it would ever run and complete. In Time Machine Preferences, I have selected Run Backup Now. I come back way later and it's done running, but I see "Waiting to complete first backup." I have tried many times to get it to complete. It says it has 3 hours remaining, then it says 2 hours remaining, then I get busy and do other things around the house. Why won't it complete its first backup? I have watched it and it starts running. Now, I'm just trying to get a second one to join my first drive in doing the backups. I used to have two backup drives doing my backups through Time Machine, but one stopped working for some reason. I do have one backup drive that does actually backup correctly (and did its initial first backup okay).

I attached a backup drive to my iMac (with Mavericks OS) that says "Waiting to complete first backup" in Time Machine and it always says that.
